Adult ADHD Diagnosis, now what?

Being diagnosed with ADHD can come as something of a shock when you’re an adult, so you may naturally be wondering where to turn and what to do next.  Luckily, there is a lot of help and support available if you are willing to look for it.

Medication

Most adults, when they are first diagnosed with ADHD, think that medication is their only option. Although this is not the case, it is fair to say that many ADHD-diagnosed adults do find medication to be helpful once they have found the right one.

Obviously, your doctor is the person best placed to discuss medication with. He or she will be able to try you on various medications and adjust dosages until you start to notice positive results. Unfortunately, it can take awhile for medication to start having an effect. It is important to let your doctor know if it is causing you any unpleasant side effects.

If you decide that medication is not for you, there are other methods of treating your ADHD symptoms that you can try…

One-to-one coaching

Did you know that ADHD coaching is actually a thing? It’s something that has helped a lot of adults with ADHD not only come to terms with their diagnosis, but also manage their ADHD symptoms and thrive. ADHD coaches guide you to set goals, find your motivation, and better manage your time by helping you to better understand yourself and your ADHD. Your brain may be neurotypical, and that’s A-OK.  Thankfully there are lots of techniques you can employ to make your life as productive as the next person’s and an ADHD coach can help guide you.

What is ADHD coaching?

ADHD coaching is a bit like life coaching, but it is completely focused on the needs of individuals with ADHD. A good ADHD coach will empower you with all of the support, encouragement, and strategies you need to live your happiest, most productive life.

Group Coaching

Something else that helps many adults who are newly diagnosed with ADHD to cope with what can be an overwhelming condition is group coaching. Being around other people who understand what you are going through, and sharing your experiences with them can be a truly transformative experience, especially when you are guided by a great ADHD adult coach with a lot of training and a great deal of empathy.

The good news is, it is possible to access excellent ADHD coaching groups online, so you can get the support and camaraderie you need from the comfort of your couch.
